| Emma, a successful radio talk show host who's written a book on relationships, is about to have her life turned upside down after advising a female caller to cancel her wedding. While attempting to get a marriage license herself, she finds out she is already married. Embarking on a search for her alleged husband, she not only finds him, but falls in love with him. Things are not what they seem. Her "husband" is a sexy NYC fireman, who turns out to be Sofia's now ex-fiancé. Her advice on compatibility makes her question everything she ever believed in about love and ends up having to choose between her fiancé Richard and the sexy NYC fireman. | ||
| Reviews: There weren't many positive reviews for this movie and the US release was cancelled when Yari Film's distribution division went bankrupt. Personally, I was never anxious to see this film from the day they started shooting in 2006. I have seen it, on Region 2 DVD, and all my fears were confirmed. However, I and some other gals on The Coliny forum were pleased (as ever) by Colin's performance and had a few thoughts we'd like to share. |

| Boring and
embarrassing are the operative words for me. I only hope that Mr. Firth's
agent was sharp enough to successfully negotiate upfront "Show me the
money!" This movie is a colossal turkey, and I mean no disrespect here to
those two legged creatures. "Gobble! Gobble! Gobble!" Loose translation:
The Turkeys are insulted. There is no chemistry and I mean NONE between
Mr. Firth and Ms. Thurman. For that matter, there is NO chemistry between
Ms. Thurman and Mr. Morgan either. What a wasted cinematic project with an
inanely bad plot, bad script, bad casting, and bad direction. The DVD did
not need any bloopers as extras: There is the movie. All that I can say in summary is this: "Mr. Firth, what were you thinking? Were you under some kind of contractual obligation to make this film?" Rhetorical questions both as I will never know the answers, but at least it gives me some comfort to think that he was forced to make this one. |

| Now, I'm not saying
that this will make my top 10 favs, but from a purely Colin perspective, I think he had a rather tricky part. They had to make him a viable lover, and a fool with an eating disorder, and an anal retentive expounding on shades of white while his romantic life was crashing around him. He was enormously sensitive to her moods and read her body language even when it defied her words. He fought for her in a very believable and committed way (soccer field scene, god, those jeans), He respected himself enough to tell her he loved her and wanted to be with her and still said he was not going to talk her into marrying him (a very fine dramatic line, I think), and then, dressed for his wedding to this insufferable bitch, clearly a statement that he hoped she would go through with it, he arrives with the unfiled annulment papers and let's her go because he wants her to be happy. Ok, so he grabs a couple of cookies on the way out. That is a very diverse role and the fact that we believe him at every level is a testimony to his wonderful talent. If he didn't sell every part of his character, the dramatic tension just wouldn't have played. His did. It was hers that didn't. I don't think she sold us on caring deeply about either of them and just la-dee-dahed her way through the whole revelation that fire-fighting wonder boy set her up to hurt her as he had been hurt. Absolutely NO physical chemistry between Uma and Colin---and doesn't that just stretch one's imagination? One would have to search the world over to replicate that female or search for Heather Graham anyway. I'd say equal to 'The English Patient' in the dumb and dumber finals, but certainly not a reflection on Colin 's delivery of a very tricky role |
